Another major figure in Italian cinema passed away Saturday. Carlo Lizzani, director, screenwriter, and documentary filmmaker,
died at age 91. He evidently committed suicide by jumping out a window.
As a screenwriter, Lizzani worked on key titles in the neorealist movement, including
Germany: Year Zero and
Bitter Rice. He generated a formidable directorial resume, producing historical dramas (
The Last Days of Mussolini), Spaghetti Westerns (
The Hills Run Red), crime films (
Bandits in Milan) and comedies (
Roma Bene). He also made several well-regarded documentaries, and in 1996 fictionalized the production of Rossellini's
Rome: Open City with his film
Celluloide.
