Footage from The Day The Clown Cried

Just a few days ago, someone uploaded this video onto Youtube. It's part of a behind-the-scenes documentary on The Day the Crown Cried (1972), a notorious lost film directed by and starring Jerry Lewis.

Wikipedia summarizes this strange project in same detail. Basically, it's a black comedy featuring Lewis as a German clown in the Nazi era. Lewis's character gets arrested for insulting Adolf Hitler and winds up in a concentration camp, where he entertains Jewish children until they're executed. It sounds laughably terrible. Lewis hated the final product so much he completely buried it. The few who've seen it mostly concur.

With Lewis still blocking its release, it's unlikely we'll see Clown any time soon. Based on available descriptions, it sounds like an unfathomable exercise in bad taste. (Jerry Lewis and bad taste? Say it ain't so!) Then again, Roberto Begnini won Best Foreign Language Film for Life is Beautiful two decades later, so who knows?
