RIP Carlo Lizzani

Another major figure in Italian cinema passed away Saturday. Carlo Lizzani, director, screenwriter, and documentary filmmaker, died at age 91. He evidently committed suicide by jumping out a window.

As a screenwriter, Lizzani worked on key titles in the neorealist movement, including Germany: Year Zero and Bitter Rice. He generated a formidable directorial resume, producing historical dramas (The Last Days of Mussolini), Spaghetti Westerns (The Hills Run Red), crime films (Bandits in Milan) and comedies (Roma Bene). He also made several well-regarded documentaries, and in 1996 fictionalized the production of Rossellini's Rome: Open City with his film Celluloide.
