Clash of the Titans

I am very interested in the US Election at the moment and can't help getting into discussions about the two prospective candidates. From a Catholic perspective it is pretty hot! I suppose that here in the UK we have got used to the idea of the office of President of the United States as being the 'most powerful in the World, leader of the free world, etc'. I suppose that he or she is in a way, but only because we give them that much credence. But then, we are pretty used to staggeringly high rates of abortions as well.

I will post a good piece by a Catholic priest about the forthcoming election. What he says is quite right, basically that the Church is beyond mainstream politics and totally above it. Yet, at the same time, Americans have a duty to vote with their conscience. And that is not such an easy task as one would think. On the one hand you have Obama who seems to promise to do much for the poorest in society and who wants to bring about "change" as we know. The Democrats have always been seen as a party for the more disadvantaged. On the other hand we have McCain, who, as demonstrated by his personal comments about abortion and his choice of Vice-President in waiting, wants to protect life from conception to natural death. However, McCain may be a bit of a George Bush Mark II and continue the neo-con's ideology of exporting war and 'democracy' to every middle eastern nation he can.

I suppose, in a way, if you elect another warmonger into office the chances are many people will die. But if you vote someone who is rabidly pro-choice into office the same will happen, but those who will die will be the innocent unborn once he gets his hands on the executive. Sadly, if I were there, I would either not vote, or vote McCain/Palin simply because they do at least seem to want to protect the most vulnerable and defenceless in society: the unborn.

Obama's stated intention to launch what basically amounts to an assault on the unborn is rather terrifying, especially given that he seeks office in a country which is still very uncomfortable with the idea.
