Recently two excellent films received a Blu-Ray release.
First comes Groggy's long-time favorite, Sam Peckinpah's Major Dundee (1965). The one person who loves Dundee as much as me is Glenn Erickson, aka DVD Savant; he provides another lengthy essay on the film. Blu-Ray.com has screencaps here. Sadly Daniele Amfitheatrof's original score isn't provided with the 134 minute cut, only the 121 minute version. Boo.
Even more interesting is this interview by Darren Gross, conducted with Helen Samuels, who played Mary Rostes in Dundee's infamous lost opening. This confirms beyond any reasonable doubt the Apache massacre was filmed. Credit Savant with a genuinely groundbreaking piece of research!
Groggy reader Michael O'Sullivan, who maintains his own blog at Mike's Movie Projector, tipped me off to a new Blu-Ray release of Joseph Losey's The Servant (1963). Mike provides some thoughts here. Blu-Ray.com has a review and some screencaps here; looks excellent. Looks like Losey's Accident (1967), unseen by me, also received a release. Somehow I don't think The Assassination of Trotsky is next.
Enough classic talk. Scathing reviews of awful movies to come later. You've been warned.
